Course overview

What this course is, and who it's for.

Our full Paediatric First Aid course meets the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework requirement for at least one person with a current full paediatric first-aid certificate to be on the premises and available at all times when children are present. It's the qualification Ofsted expect for nursery managers, room leads, registered childminders, pre-school assistants, and anyone who counts in your staff:child ratios.

We deliver it as a blended course — six hours of online theory you can complete at your own pace (perfect for fitting around shifts and settling-in periods), followed by six hours in person where we focus entirely on the hands-on skills that matter most: paediatric CPR, AED use, choking management for infants and children, and the scenarios you'll most likely face in a setting with under-fives. Total time commitment is the same 12 hours required by EYFS, but split in a way that keeps your setting running.

Full syllabus

What's covered, in detail.

Every module below is taught with practical demonstration and learner practice — not slide after slide. Skills are revisited multiple times across the course so they actually stick.

  1. Role of a paediatric first aider

EYFS legal requirements, safeguarding overlap, parental contact, accident reporting, RIDDOR.

  2. Primary survey adapted for infants & children

Age-appropriate response checks, airway differences in babies, paediatric ABC.

  3. Infant CPR (under 1)

Two-finger compressions, head-tilt depth, rescue breaths, AED with paediatric pads.

  4. Child CPR (1 to puberty)

One- or two-handed compressions, age-appropriate ratios, AED use.

  5. Choking — infant & child

Back blows, chest thrusts (infant), abdominal thrusts (child), post-incident review.

  6. Unresponsive casualty & recovery position

Modified recovery position for infants, ongoing observation, escalation.

  7. Bleeding, wounds & shock

Direct pressure, dressings, recognising shock in small children.

  8. Burns & scalds

Hot drinks (the #1 paediatric burn cause), bath water, heaters, cooling and dressing.

  9. Bumps, bruises, head injuries & seizures

When a head bump needs medical review, febrile convulsions, epilepsy, post-seizure care.

  10. Asthma, allergic reactions & anaphylaxis

Spacers and inhalers, EpiPen Junior, anaphylaxis recognition in pre-verbal children.

  11. Meningitis, sepsis, croup, diabetes

Recognition and the urgency of escalation. Glass test, sepsis red flags.

  12. Common childhood illness & when to refer

Fever, dehydration, vomiting, asthma exacerbation — practical recognition.

  13. Practical assessment

Continuous observation across the day plus a short paper at the end. Pass mark required for EYFS compliance.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Paediatric First Aid.

Does this course meet EYFS / Ofsted requirements?
Yes. The full Paediatric First Aid course is 12 hours total and meets the EYFS statutory framework requirement for staff counting in childcare ratios. It's also Ofqual-regulated at Level 3, which is what Ofsted look for at inspection.
Why is the course split 6 hrs online + 6 hrs in-person?
Twelve consecutive hours in a classroom is hard to schedule for childcare staff and a tough way to learn. Splitting the theory into bite-sized online modules gives staff time to absorb the content, and lets us spend the entire in-person day on the hands-on skills that actually matter — paediatric CPR, choking management, AED, anaphylaxis. The certificate is identical.
Is Emergency Paediatric First Aid (6 hrs) enough?
EPFA is enough for staff who don't count in EYFS ratios — for example, sports coaches, holiday-club helpers, and Year 1+ school staff. If a staff member needs to count in your nursery's ratios under EYFS, they need the full 12-hour course.
How long does the certificate last?
Three years from the date of issue. We send a free reminder ahead of expiry so your setting never accidentally drops out of compliance.
Can you deliver this in our nursery?
Yes — onsite is our most popular delivery for childcare settings. We typically run the in-person 6 hours on a Saturday or after-hours weekday so the setting stays operational, but we'll work around your roster.
