Course overview

What this course is, and who it's for.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is the standard 1-day workplace first aid qualification for the UK. It's designed for organisations whose Health and Safety needs assessment has identified a low-risk environment — typical examples include offices, shops, small studios, light hospitality and many community groups. By the end of the day, your nominated first aiders will have the skills and confidence to assess an incident, deliver CPR, use an AED, manage an unresponsive casualty and treat the most common workplace injuries until the emergency services arrive.

We deliver EFAW across Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and the wider South East — at your premises, our local venue, or any neutral training space that suits your team. Class sizes are deliberately capped at 8 learners as standard so every person gets meaningful hands-on time on the manikins. We've found that's the difference between a certificate on the wall and a first aider who'd actually step forward in a real emergency.

Full syllabus

What's covered, in detail.

Every module below is taught with practical demonstration and learner practice — not slide after slide. Skills are revisited multiple times across the course so they actually stick.

  1. Roles & responsibilities of a first aider

Legal duties, scene safety, infection control, record-keeping, when to call 999.

  2. Primary survey (DR ABC)

Danger, response, airway, breathing, circulation — the structured approach used by every responder.

  3. Unresponsive casualty

Airway management, recovery position, recognising abnormal breathing, ongoing assessment.

  4. Adult CPR

High-quality compressions, rescue breaths, two-rescuer handover, fatigue management.

  5. Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Practical AED use, pad placement, safe shock delivery, integration with CPR.

  6. Choking

Mild vs severe airway obstruction, back blows, abdominal thrusts, post-incident referral.

  7. Bleeding & shock

Severe bleeding control, catastrophic haemorrhage, recognising and managing shock.

  8. Common workplace injuries

Burns, scalds, minor wounds, eye injuries, fractures, head injuries, sprains and strains.

  9. Common medical conditions

Heart attack, stroke (FAST), seizures, asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis — recognise and respond.

  10. Practical assessment

Continuous observation throughout the day plus a short scenario-based assessment. No formal exam.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about EFAW.

Is EFAW the right course for my workplace?
It's the right course if your Health and Safety needs assessment has identified your environment as low-risk. Typical low-risk settings include offices, shops, light hospitality and community spaces. If you have higher hazards (machinery, chemicals, working at height, or more than around 25 staff), the 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW) course is usually more appropriate. We're happy to talk it through if you're not sure.
How many EFAW first aiders do I need?
The HSE doesn't set fixed ratios, but their guidance broadly suggests one EFAW first aider for every 25 low-risk staff. We'd usually recommend at least two so you have cover for absence and shifts. We can help you size it correctly during your enquiry.
How long does the EFAW certificate last?
Three years from the date of issue. The HSE strongly recommends an annual refresher in between to keep skills current — we offer a half-day BLS & AED refresher specifically for that purpose.
Do you deliver EFAW at my workplace?
Yes — onsite delivery is the most popular option. We bring all the manikins, training AEDs and consumables. You provide a room with chairs that can be cleared to the side for floor work, and ideally a screen or large monitor.
How much does EFAW cost?
From £96 per learner for groups of 4 or more delivered onsite (with regular promotional discounts available — most recently 20% off). Smaller groups and individual seats on a scheduled open course are also available — get in touch with your numbers and postcode for a tailored quote.
