Appointed Person
No formal qualification legally required - but training is strongly recommended
For very small, low-risk workplaces the HSE requires you to appoint a responsible person to take charge in an emergency. While no formal certificate is legally mandatory at this size, HSE strongly recommends that appointed persons complete Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) to be properly prepared.

Low risk · 25–50 staff
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
Level 3, 1-day course · Certificate valid for 3 years
HSE recommends Emergency First Aid at Work for low-risk workplaces with 25–50 employees. This one-day course gives first aiders the skills to respond to life-threatening emergencies, manage common injuries, and support casualties until the emergency services arrive.

First Aid at Work (FAW)
Level 3, 1 day online + 2 days in person · Certificate valid for 3 years
First Aid at Work is the comprehensive HSE-regulated Level 3 qualification required for higher-risk workplaces or large low-risk organisations. It covers a wide range of injuries and medical emergencies and is the industry standard for designated workplace first aiders.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) - minimum
Level 3, 1-day course · Certificate valid for 3 years
For higher-risk workplaces with fewer than 50 employees, EFAW is the minimum recommended qualification. However, given the elevated risk environment, many employers in this category choose to provide the full First Aid at Work qualification for more comprehensive cover.

Consider upgrading to First Aid at WorkFor medium/high risk environments the broader skill set of FAW is often recommended even below 50 staff, particularly where hazards are significant.

EYFS / Ofsted requirement
Paediatric First Aid (PFA) - Full 12-hour Course
2-day (12-hour) course · Certificate valid for 3 years
The full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course is a legal requirement under the EYFS Statutory Framework for registered childminders and any nursery or preschool practitioner who may be left in sole charge of children. At least one PFA-qualified person must be on the premises and available at all times when children are present. Certificates must be renewed every 3 years.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA)
1-day (6-hour) course · Certificate valid for 3 years
The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is a Level 3 qualification covering core skills for responding to paediatric emergencies. It is suitable for childminder assistants (not in sole charge), sports coaches, activity leaders, and parents. Note: this course alone does not meet Ofsted/EYFS requirements for anyone who may ever be left in sole charge of children.

Advanced Life Support (ALS)
2-day course (or blended learning) · Delivered by SafeServe First Aid
Our Advanced Life Support course is designed for healthcare professionals working in acute and critical care environments including ED, ICU/HDU, CCU, theatres, and resuscitation teams. It covers the full range of advanced resuscitation skills through lectures, simulations, and hands-on workshops.

Immediate Life Support (ILS)

Our Immediate Life Support course is designed for healthcare professionals who need to recognise and respond to deteriorating patients and cardiac arrest, but do not routinely lead resuscitation attempts. Ideal for ward nurses, GPs, allied health professionals and community-based clinicians.

Basic Life Support (BLS) and AED Awareness
Half-day course (approx. 4 hours) · Delivered by SafeServe First Aid
Basic Life Support training is suitable for non-clinical healthcare staff, support workers, care assistants, and members of the public who want confidence in responding to a cardiac arrest or emergency. Covers CPR, the recovery position and safe AED use.

Personal / general public
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or First Aid Awareness
Level 3, 1-day course · Certificate valid for 3 years
While there is no legal requirement for members of the public to hold a first aid certificate, the 1-day EFAW course is an excellent, widely recognised qualification for anyone wanting real confidence in an emergency - at home, out and about, or in a voluntary role. Many providers also offer shorter First Aid Awareness half-day sessions.
